Sharks or bears—which are more dangerous?

Many tourists are wary of flying to Egypt for a vacation on the Red Sea. There is a reason for this: sharks. It is hardly appealing to go swimming when you know there might be sharks in the water.

Over the last 15 years (from 2009 to 2026), around 10 to 12 people have died from shark attacks in Egypt’s Red Sea waters (we do not have more precise figures).

Staying home is much safer, yet bears have become more active this year. In the first nine months of 2026 alone, bears killed more than 20 people in Russia. That is a very high number.

Which animals pose a greater danger to tourists? Sharks are certainly very dangerous. However, for a shark to attack, one must enter the sea; on land, we are safe.

Unlike sharks, bears come to people on their own and can even break into homes. Escaping a bear is difficult. In some regions of Russia, people are likely afraid to leave their homes—and not just in Siberia, but even in the mountains near Sochi.

Yet, there are creatures that are even more dangerous. In Russia, an average of 30 to 50 people die annually from tick-borne viral encephalitis.
Furthermore, the tiger population in Russia is on the rise.
